Timo Hämäläinen
Dr. Timo Hämäläinen is responsible for the development of Sitra’s strategic research activities and core competences.
These include systemic change capacity, new governance structures and the empowerment and well-being of citizens.
Prior to his current post, Hämäläinen was responsible for Sitra’s foresight activities.
He created the National Foresight Network which promotes future-oriented thinking among Finnish decision makers
by facilitating their interaction with futurists and foresight experts. Hämäläinen has also held the
positions of Research director and Director of innovative operations (social innovation projects) in Sitra.
Before joining Sitra in 1998, Hämäläinen worked for the Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry
as a policy analyst. In the Ministry, he co-authored the industrial policy strategy of Finland in 1996.
This strategy redefined the microeconomic role of Finnish government in developing the framework conditions
for national competitiveness. Hämäläinen has a Master's degree in marketing from Helsinki
School of Economics and an MBA and Ph.D. in international business from Rutgers University, New Jersey.
His research interests focus on international competitiveness, systemic innovations, economic organization
and well-being.
